Mets aim for 10th straight win vs. Reds

CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- The New York Mets turn to ace Johan Santana as they look to extend a season-long winning streak to 10 games when they visit the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday for the opener of a four-game series.

Entering the All-Star break, the Mets appeared unhittable and unbeatable. They have not surrendered a run in 22 innings and have climbed to within one-half game of the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies(52-44).

Santana (8-7, 2.84 ERA) will look to continue that trend as he seeks his second straight win.

The two-time Cy Young Award winning lefthander pitched five scoreless innings during last Wednesday's 5-0 victory over the San Francisco Giants. He allowed three hits and three walks with five strikeouts en route to snapping a personal four-game losing skid that dated to June 1.

The Reds will counter with rookie Johnny Cueto, who gave up five runs - four earned - and eight hits with six strikeouts over 6 2/3 frames in a 5-1 setback to the Chicago Cubs eight days ago.

Cincinnati had a three-game winning streak snapped with a 3-2 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. The Brewers scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
