Scott, Orioles look to win three of four against Tigers
Jul 20, 2008 - 2:51 PM Detroit (48-49) at Baltimore (47-49), 1:35 pm EDTBALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Luke Scott and the Baltimore Orioles hope to carry momentum from a thrilling victory into Sunday when they conclude a four-game series with the Detroit Tigers.
Scott blasted a game-winning homer in the 10th inning Saturday, capping a wild game in which the Orioles rallied from several deficits - including a six-run hole in the first. Ramon Hernandez hit a game-tying solo shot against Tigers reliever Joel Zumaya in the ninth to set up Scott's clutch hit.
Scott has three homers in his last two games and is 5-for-9 with five RBI and four runs in the series. Aubrey Huff is 16-for-33 with three homers and eight RBI in his past nine games for Baltimore.
On Saturday, Placido Polanco went 4-for-6 and Gary Sheffield added three hits for the Tigers, who dropped one game below the .500 mark.
Ace Justin Verlander (7-9, 4.15 ERA) will star Sunday for Detroit, which will try to avoid a third straight loss and salvage a split with the American League East Division' fourth-place club.
Verlander has won five straight decisions and hasn't allowed more than two runs in an outing since June 6, when he gave up three in seven innings.
Baltimore will counter with Brian Burres (7-5, 5.02), who has held opponents to three runs or less in six of his past seven starts. The 27-year-old lefthander hasn't lost since June 1, when he surrendered seven runs and 12 hits in four innings against the Boston Red Sox.
