Lee targets AL-best 13th win vs. Mariners

Jul 20, 2008 - 3:17 PM Cleveland (42-54) at Seattle (38-59) 4:10 pm EDT

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- When Carlos Silva inked a $48 million contract this past winter, he was supposed to provide a stabilizing force to the Seattle Mariners' rotation. However, it has been Cliff Lee who looked more like a high-dollar pitcher this season.

Lee will attempt to become the American League's first 13-game winner on Sunday when the Cleveland Indians meet the Mariners in the rubber match of the teams' three-game set.

While Silva (4-11, 5.46 ERA) has failed to live up to his contract, Lee (12-2, 2.31) has completely turned his struggles from last season around.

After enduring a 5-8 campaign last season with a 6.29 ERA, a minor-league assignment and multiple stints on the disabled list, Lee has coasted so far in 2008, turning a strong first half into a starting role at Tuesday's All-Star Game.

Lee, who is tied with the Yankees' Mike Mussina and the Angels' Joe Saunders for the AL lead in wins, also showed why he is among the AL leaders in ERA with another stellar performance on July 11, allowing just five hits and striking out seven over six innings in a 5-0 victory over Tampa Bay.

Silva can relate much more to Lee's struggles from a season ago, as he is 1-11 with a 6.93 ERA since the beginning of May. However, the righthander did not factor into the decision in last Sunday's game at Kansas City after allowing two runs and eight hits over six frames in the Mariners' 4-3 victory.
