Struggling offense has Athletics on season-high losing streak
Jul 21, 2008 - 1:38 PM Oakland (51-47) at Tampa Bay (57-40) 7:10 p.m EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics have had a hard time scoring runs lately and things don't look to get any better on Monday when they open a three-game series against Scott Kazmir and the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Athletics have averaged just 1.8 runs per game while dropping a season-high five straight contests. Oakland scored just five runs total and were swept during a three-game series by the New York Yankees, which concluded with a 2-1 loss on Sunday.
The A's will have a difficult time against Kazmir (7-5, 3.04 ERA), who finally takes the mound after earning the win during Tuesday's All-Star game at Yankee Stadium.
The Rays' ace was available on Sunday after throwing one scoreless inning as the American League claimed a 4-3 victory in 15 innings.
However, manager Joe Maddon decided to give Kazmir an extra day of rest after he allowed five runs and eight hits in six innings, walking two while striking out seven on July 13. The 24-year-old lefthander threw 104 pitches during a 5-2 loss to the Cleveland Indians.
Dana Eveland (7-6, 3.49) takes the mound for the A's on Monday after suffering a hard-luck loss his last time out. Eveland allowed just two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out five but also walked five en route to a 4-1 setback against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on July 12.
