Red Sox hope to get back on track against Mariners
Jul 21, 2008 - 1:51 PM Boston (57-43) at Seattle (38-60), 10:10 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox look to get back on track after getting swept in the first series of the second half as they take on the Seattle Mariners in the opener of a three-game set on Monday at Safeco Field.
The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, who now own the best record in the major leagues, took three games this past weekend from the Red Sox.
Tim Wakefield threw seven solid innings on Sunday, but an eighth-inning rally doomed Boston's chance to avoid going 0-3 since the All-Star break.
Jon Lester (7-3, 3.38 ERA) takes the mound looking to extend his personal winning streak to five decisions. In the lefthander's last start, he surrendered five runs and nine hits in 7 1/3 innings in a loss to the Minnesota Twins on July 8.
Prior to that, he tossed a four-hit shutout against the New York Yankees.
Seattle will counter with Jarrod Washburn (4-8, 4.83), who was supposed to start on Saturday, but was scratched for suffering from flu-like symptoms.
Washburn has held opponents to two earned runs or less in seven of his last nine starts and has lowered his ERA from 6.99 to his current mark in that span.
The Mariners are coming off a series in which they dropped two of three to the Cleveland Indians and currently own the worst record in the American League.
For the Red Sox, Dustin Pedroia went 3-for-4 on Sunday, raising his average to .322.
