Rays look to continue strong second half
Jul 22, 2008 - 10:11 AM Oakland (51-48) at Tampa Bay (58-40) 7:10 p.m. EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- There may not have been a team that needed the All-Star break more than the Tampa Bay Rays.
Losers of seven straight prior to the mid-summer classic, the Rays have won three of four since and will look to continue their winning ways Tuesday night when they take on the Oakland Athletics.
The Rays have regained the lead in the AL East from the Boston Red Sox (58-43), who have dropped three of four to start the second half, while the A's continue to plummet in the AL West.
Tampa Bay will throw righthander Andy Sonnanstine (10-4, 4.58 ERA), who will be looking to rebound from a rough start on July 10. The 25-year old suffered his first loss since May 27, allowing six runs on nine hits over 5 1/3 innings in a 13-2 thrashing by Cleveland.
Sonnanstine will try to match the Monday night performance of teammate Scott Kazmir. The lefty scattered two hits and four walks over seven innings while striking out nine in the Rays' 4-0 win.
The loss was Oakland's sixth straight and the offense has managed only nine runs during the slide.
Dallas Braden (1-0, 4.80) will make his first start of the season for the A's. The lefthander, who has made nine relief appearances this season, will replace Joe Blanton in the starting rotation. Blanton was traded to the Phillies on Thursday for three minor leaguers. Last season, Braden went 1-8 with a 6.72 era in 14 starts for Oakland.
