Maddux seeks first win in more than two months vs. Reds
Jul 23, 2008 - 10:09 AM San Diego (38-63) at Cincinnati (49-53) 12:35 pm. EDTCINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux aims to snap a career-high equaling 13-start winless streak on Wednesday as the San Diego Padres wrap up a series with the Cincinnati Reds.
The 42-year-old Maddux (3-8, 4.21 ERA) has had no problem racking up victories over his career, ranking first among active pitchers with 350 wins. The problem is, the "Bulldog" has not won since he became the ninth pitcher in major league history to reach that milestone on May 10.
Maddux has gone 0-5 with a 4.62 ERA since that magical night in San Diego, and is in danger of matching his career-worst winless streak set from May 11-July 14, 1990. On Friday, Maddux was tagged for six runs and eight hits in a season-low four innings, but did not factor into the decision in an 11-7 loss to St. Louis.
The good news for Maddux is that he has owned the Reds, going 6-0 with a 2.03 ERA in his last seven starts against them.
San Diego, which owns the worst record in baseball, is trying to bounce back from Tuesday's 4-3 loss in 11 innings. Jeff Keppinger hit a RBI double to give the Reds their major league-leading 10th walk-off win.
In order to rebound, the Padres will have to solve Bronson Arroyo (8-7, 5.71), who looks nothing like the pitcher he was in the first half of the season. Arroyo's horrible first-half was highlighted by a June 24 start that saw him allow a career-high tying 10 runs in one inning of a 14-1 loss to Toronto. Since, the righthander has won four straight starts, posting a 2.88 ERA in that span.
