Giants hoping power surge continues
Jul 23, 2008 - 10:13 AM Washington (38-62) at San Francisco (41-58) 10:15 p.m. EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- The San Francisco Giants appear to have ended their power outage in time to claim some wins at home.
After snapping a four-game home losing streak, the Giants look to build some momentum on Wednesday when they continue their series against the Washington Nationals.
Bengie Molina launched a pair of home runs and Fred Lewis added his first career leadoff homer to help San Francisco snap a three-game slide overall with a 6-3 victory over the Nationals on Tuesday.
The Giants had notched three homers overall during their last 18 games and the victory marked the first time since May 23 that the team hit three home runs in a contest. The win was also San Francisco's fourth at AT&T Park this month, surpassing the totals of May and June by one as the team owns the worst home record in the majors at 18-31.
Molina, 34, may be the only veteran staying in the lineup down the stretch after 41-year-old Omar Vizquel was told by management before the victory that his playing time would be limited in favor of rookie shortstop Emmanuel Burriss. The move came two days after the Giants shipped veteran Ray Durham to the Milwaukee Brewers, making 26-year-old Eugenio Velez the starting second baseman.
Kevin Correia (1-5, 5.81 ERA) hopes the Giants' youthful lineup can provide him with some much-needed support when he takes the mound on Wednesday.
Correia, whose last win came on April 10, allowed seven runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings, walking four while striking out four. The 27-year-old righthander did not factor in the decision as the Giants suffered an 8-7 setback to the Chicago Cubs on July 12.
The Nationals counter with rookie Collin Balester (1-2, 5.87), who will be making his fourth career start . Balester has lost his last two starts and probably would like a comfortable lead by the time he departs because Washington traded closer Jon Rauch and his 17 saves to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
