Top MLB Betting Odds & Picks for Wednesday, August 3rd (2022)

Aug 3, 2022 - 11:10 AM

After more than a week of deliberating where Juan Soto would land, the San Diego Padres made the biggest splash at the trade deadline by acquiring both Soto and Josh Bell early Wednesday. As a result, San Diego’s future odds of winning the World Series increased the most of any team, and their moneyline odds for each game will likely be steeper for the rest of the regular season. However, while many pundits think those moves could be what gets them over the hump this year, not everybody was equally impressed.

Here are our best bets for Wednesday’s MLB action. (Odds courtesy of DraftKings)

Baltimore Orioles vs. Texas Rangers ML

Of these two teams, the Orioles seem to have much more to play for over the final two months, as they are two games over .500 and not far out of a wild card spot, while the Rangers are 11 games under .500 and buried behind four other teams for the American League’s third wild card spot. However, Baltimore dealing Trey Mancini to Houston signaled that they are not willing to capitalize on outperforming their preseason expectations. His right-handed bat will be sorely missed against the Rangers’ Martin Perez (9-2, 2.52).

Perez is unbeaten since April 17, a stretch that spans 18 starts, and he has allowed just three earned runs over his last 19 innings. In addition, he has allowed one or fewer earned runs in six of his last eight home starts.

All the trends suggest the Orioles are the right side in this matchup. Texas is 0-5 against the Orioles this year, is 0-6 in its last six home games, and is 0-9 in its previous eight games against teams .500 or better. However, three of Baltimore’s victories over Texas last month were by one run, two of which came in extra-innings. Thus, Baltimore has not been as dominant against the Rangers as the numbers suggest, and we do not like the vibes we are getting out of the Orioles clubhouse after the Mancini deal.

Bet: Texas Rangers ML (-150 at DraftKings)

Kansas City Royals vs. Chicago White Sox: White Sox Team Total O/U

If you want to watch a clinic on how to neutralize one of the best offenses in the game, watch tape of Brady Singer’s last outing against the Yankees. Singer held New York to one hit over seven innings while striking out ten and has now amassed 22 strikeouts over his previous 13 innings. Singer should have success against a White Sox lineup that has struggled against right-handed pitching all year, as their 94 wRC+ (ranks 22nd) against righties is much worse than their third-ranked wRC+ (122) against southpaws.

The under is 22-8-1 in the last 31 meetings between these teams, and we expect Singer to do his part in helping the under cash once again while preventing Chicago from scoring runs.

Bet: Chicago White Sox Team Total UNDER 4.5 Runs (-115 at DraftKings)

Cincinnati Reds vs. Miami Marlins O/U

Of all the futures odds for the major MLB awards, only Aaron Judge’s odds to win the American League MVP are steeper than Sandy Alcantara’s to win the NL Cy Young. Alcantara leads the league in ERA (1.99), ERA+ (204), and innings pitched (149.1) while allowing just 6.1 hits per nine innings.

Before Alcantara’s last two starts that featured double-digit run totals, no game that he was involved in had more than eight combined runs scored in any of his previous 11 starts, and five of those had three or fewer runs scored.

To be confident in the under cashing in this game, one has to be sure that Reds starter Mike Minor (1-7, 6.31) can turn in a solid performance that matches what we expect from Alcantara. Minor is looking to build off a solid July where he lowered his ERA by 1.40 runs. In addition, there is no better matchup in the league for the Cincinnati lefty, as the Marlins rank 30th in wRC+ (73) and OPS (.599) against southpaws this season.

Bet: Reds-Marlins UNDER 6.5 Runs (+105 at DraftKings)
