Brewers look to win rubber match against Astros
Jul 27, 2008 - 2:24 PM Houston (47-56) at Milwaukee (60-44), 2:05 pm EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Brewers hoped to avoid looking ahead to a huge series when they face the Houston Astros on Sunday.
Tied with the Chicago Cubs atop the National League Central, the Brewers and Cubs begin a four-game series here Monday.
Milwaukee trailed Chicago by five games at the All-Star break, but the acquisition of CC Sabathia and the increased level of play by Ryan Braun and Bill Hall have helped it become one of the most feared clubs in the NL.
Jeff Suppan (5-6, 4.65 ERA) will take the mound for the Brewers, hoping to avoid losing his first game since June 25. The 33-year-old righthander has held opponents to three runs or less in seven of his last 10 starts and will be making his first appearance against Houston this season.
The Astros will counter with Randy Wolf (6-10, 4.74), who was acquired from the San Diego Padres on Wednesday for pitcher Chad Reineke.
Wolf will be making his first start against the Brewers in 2008 and is coming off a skaky outing on July 19. While facing the St. Louis Cardinals, he allowed six runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings during a 6-5 loss.
For the Brewers, Bill Hall lifted the go-ahead sacrifice fly on Saturday and Braun blasted his 27th homer of the season en route to a 6-4 triumph.
On Friday, Wandy Rodriguez tossed six solid innings and helped the Astros to a 3-1 win, snapping a four-game losing streak.
