Former Cy Young winners face off in finale between Giants and Diamondbacks
Jul 27, 2008 - 2:34 PM Arizona (52-51) at San Francisco (43-60) 4:05 pm EDTSAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Brandon Webb and Tim Lincecum each lived up to their billing on Saturday, but the San Francisco Giants bullpen sure didn't.
Perhaps Sunday's matchup of former Cy Young award winners will be equally impressive, as the Giants attempt to avoid a three-game sweep at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Barry Zito (5-12, 5.56 ERA) will take the mound for the Giants with hopes on continuing his recent success on the mound. The 2003 American League Cy Young started the season 0-8 with a 6.25 ERA, but is 2-0 with a 3.50 mark in three starts this month.
However, the lefthander is 0-2 with a 6.32 ERA in three outings against Arizona this season.
The Diamondbacks counter with Randy Johnson (7-7, 4.89), who is coming off his best start of the season in which he stymied the Chicago Cubs on Monday by throwing seven scoreless innings while allowing two hits.
The 44-year-old lefthander has faced the Giants twice this season, but hasn't factored in any decision. He has a 1.50 ERA and has struck out 16 in 12 innings.
Conor Jackson was the hero in Saturday's 5-3 triumph, delivering the eventual game-winning hit - an RBI single against Tyler Walker - to highlight a three-run rally in the eighth inning.
Lincecum struck out a career-high 13 in seven sterling innings, but his outing was ruined by the suspect bullpen of the Giants. His counterpart, Webb, was the beneficiary after throwing seven solid innings.
Aaron Rowand smacked a two-run single and has gotten a hit in eight of his last 10 games.
For Arizona, newly acquired reliever Jon Rauch threw a perfect eighth inning before Brandon Lyon notched his 21st save on Saturday.
On Friday, the Diamondbacks recorded a 10-2 victory behind a strong pitching performance by Dan Haren.
