Rays look to take rubber match of three-game set against Blue Jays

Jul 30, 2008 - 10:16 AM Tampa Bay (62-44) at Toronto (54-53), 12:37 pm EDT

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Rays have to be thankful they still sit atop the American League East Division after averaging 2.6 runs over their last 18 games.

The Rays' struggling offense looks to get back on track against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday.

Edwin Jackson (6-7, 4.22 ERA) takes the mound for Tampa Bay with hopes of erasing a shoddy effort against the Blue Jays on July 20 during which he allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings en route to a 9-4 loss.

The 24-year-old righthander has held opponents to four runs or less in eight of his last 10 starts He is 2-4 with a 4.21 ERA in 10 starts against AL East rivals.

A major reason why the Rays haven't been clicking is that outfielder Carl Crawford is batting .183 over the struggling span.

Perhaps that bodes well for Scott Richmond (NR), who will make his major league debut for the Blue Jays with a tough first assignment - produce better results than Roy Halladay did on Tuesday.

The Blue Jays' ace surrendered three runs and six hits while striking out eight in eight solid innings, but was out-dueled by Matt Garza in the Rays' 3-0 triumph.

When manager Cito Gaston decided to put righthander John Parrish in the bullpen, Toronto purchased Richmond's contract from Class AAA Syracuse on Monday. The 28-year-old was 5-10 with a 4.29 ERA in 21 starts between Class AA and AAA.

On Tuesday, Eric Hinske belted his 100th career homer, burning the team he spent time with from 2002-06.
