Chamberlain, Yankees take on Orioles in series finale
Jul 30, 2008 - 10:10 AM Baltimore (51-55) at NY Yankees (58-48), 1:05 pm EDTBRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Joba Chamberlain has gone from reliever to starter. Now, he must become a stopper.
The 22-year-old will take the mound on Wednesday as the New York Yankees try to salvage one game of their series with the Baltimore Orioles.
Chamberlain (3-3, 2.30 ERA) is 2-1 with a 2.31 ERA since June 3, when he made the transition from the bullpen to the Yankees' rotation. This will be his first start against the Orioles, but he is 1-0 with a 2.86 ERA in three starts against American League East rivals.
The righthander is 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA in two starts since the All-Star break, striking out 17 in 13 innings. In his last outing, he blanked the Boston Red Sox over seven innings on Friday while being the beneficiary of a 1-0 victory.
Baltimore calls on Dennis Sarfate (4-1, 3.78), who will make his first major league start. The 27-year-old righthander made 45 relief appearances before manager Mike Trembley decided to put lefthander Brian Burres in the bullpen this week.
In the second game of the series, Daniel Cabrera pitched effectively into the eighth as the Orioles held on for a 7-6 victory.
Aubrey Huff tied a career high with four hits, including a three-run double and solo homer, and Kevin Millar homered for the second straight night while Melvin Mora added two RBI for Baltimore, which had lost five in a row before Sunday.
The Orioles cruised to a 13-4 win in the opener on Monday behind Adam Jones' five-RBI effort.
