Twins eyeing top spot in AL Central, host Indians

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Joe Mauer and the Minnesota Twins hope to keep rolling and - with a little help - take the top spot in the American League Central when they host the Cleveland Indians on Saturday.

The Twins, who have won six of their previous seven, sit one-half game behind the division-leading Chicago White Sox (61-47).

Mauer helped Minnesota keep pace Friday, delivering a two-run homer in the seventh inning to snap a tie and lead the Twins to a 4-1 triumph. Mauer, who leads the club with a .319 batting average, has seven blasts and 52 RBI.

Cleveland starter Paul Byrd (5-10, 4.93) is looking to pick up his third straight win. The righthander tossed 7 2/3 solid frames in Monday's 5-0 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Before his last two starts, the 37-year-old Byrd had lost his previous five decisions.

Minnesota will counter with righthander Kevin Slowey (7-7, 4.00), who pitched a complete game in Monday's 7-0 triumph over the White Sox. He has won five of his last six.
