Phillies look to start new streak vs. Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Braden Looper will try to win consecutive starts for the first time since early spring when the St. Louis Cardinals host the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.

Looper (10-8, 4.38 ERA) began the season 5-1, but has not won back-to-back starts since April 30 and May 6. The righthander is winless in his last four trips to the mound at Busch Stadium.

St. Louis halted Philadelphia's five-game winning streak with a 6-3 win on Friday. Joe Mather hit a three-run homer, Ryan Ludwick added two solo shots and former Phillie Kyle Lohse pitched 5 1/3 innings for his 13th win.

The Cardinals find themselves in a tie with the Milwaukee Brewers (61-49), four games behind the National League Central-leading Chicago Cubs (65-45)

Joe Blanton (0-0, 7.88) makes his third start for the Phillies since being acquired from the Oakland Athletics. He was roughed up for five runs in six innings by the New York Mets in his debut and had his last start against the Atlanta Braves cut short because of a lengthy rain delay.

Philadelphia slugger Ryan Howard is 3-for-4 with three home runs lifetime against Looper, who has a career 5.85 ERA against the Phillies from his days with the Florida Marlins and Mets.

The Phillies hold a one-game lead over the Mets (58-50) with the Marlins (58-52) 1 1/2 behind.
