Young pitchers face off as Giants and Braves open series

Aug 4, 2008 - 1:51 PM Atlanta (51-60) at San Francisco (46-64), 10:15 pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Matt Cain and Jair Jurrjens each represent a positive aspect on teams mired in mediocrity and struggling to stay away from being two of the National League's worst.

The two young hurlers face off Monday as the San Francisco Giants and Atlanta Braves begin a three-game series at AT&T Park.

The Braves are 10 games ahead of the lowly Washington Nationals (41-70) in the National League East, but seem worlds away from taking part in the three-team race at the top between the Philadelphia Phillies (61-50), Florida Marlins (59-53) and New York Mets (58-53).

Meanwhile, San Francisco is 10 1/2 games behind the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks (57-54) in the NL West.

Cain (6-9, 3.70 ERA) has a 2.71 ERA in his last nine starts, but has just three wins to show for his recent dominance. In that span, the 23-year-old has 64 strikeouts while allowing 51 hits in 63 innings.

Tuesday's 2-0 setback against the Dodgers was no different for Cain, who was saddled with the loss despite yielding two runs - one earned - and eight hits over seven frames, striking out eight.

For the Braves, Jurrjens (10-6, 3.06) has held opponents scoreless in four of his last 10 outings and has given up three runs in his last 15 innings, which spans over two previous starts.

However, Jurrjens also took the loss in Wednesday's 7-2 setback against St. Louis despite permitting three runs and seven hits over seven innings.

The 22-year-old righthander is 4-1 with a 2.62 ERA in six starts against the NL West this season.
