Moyer attempts to remain perfect vs. Marlins

Aug 5, 2008 - 1:16 PM Florida (59-53) at Philadelphia (61-50) 7:05 pm EDT

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- If the Florida Marlins have any hope of overtaking the Philadelphia Phillies atop the National League East anytime soon, they'll need to solve a long-time veteran pitcher they have never defeated.

Jamie Moyer will try to maintain his career-long dominance of the Marlins on Tuesday when the teams begin an important three-game set.

Moyer (10-6, 3.79 ERA) has enjoyed a great amount of success over his 22-year career, posting 240 wins. But while he has double-digit wins over 11 major league teams, he has made defeating Florida quite the habit.

The lefthander has won each of his 10 career starts against the Marlins, including three this season, sporting a 3.03 ERA in the process.

A win by Florida would not only end the dubious losing streak to the 44-year-old Moyer, but it would also help the team cut into the 2 1/2-game lead Philadelphia owns in the division entering this series.

That task will fall in the hands of Josh Johnson (1-0, 4.18), who has guided the Marlins to wins in each of his four starts since returning from reconstructive elbow surgery.

The righthander collected his first win since August 28, 2006 in Wednesday's 7-5 triumph over the Mets after permitting four runs and eight hits over 6 2/3 innings.
