Payroll not limiting Marlins success

Aug 6, 2008 - 10:14 AM Florida (60-53) at Philadelphia (61-51) 7:05 p.m. EDT

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Despite the smallest payroll in the majors, the Florida Marlins are threatening the top spot in the National League East .

The Marlins try to move within one-half game of the first-place Philadelphia Phillies when the teams met on Wednesday.

Florida has a payroll of just under $22 million, ranking last in the majors, nearly $21 million behind the Tampa Bay Rays, who own the second-lowest payroll. However, that hasn't stopped the Marlins from battling the reigning NL East champion Phillies and New York Mets for division supremacy.

Jeremy Hermida, who will make $395,000 this season, had four RBI during the series opener on Tuesday as Florida claimed an 8-2 win - its third straight and sixth in the last 10 games against Philadelphia.

Anibal Sanchez (1-0, 3.18 ERA) makes his second start of the season after missing nearly 15 months following right-shoulder surgery in 2007.

Sanchez pitched well in his return on Thursday, allowing two runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out four en route to a 12-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies.

Kyle Kendrick (9-5, 4.59) counters for the Phillies, hoping to improve upon his last outing against the Marlins. Kendrick was pounded for a season-high seven runs and 10 hits in 4 1/3 innings during Philadelphia's 9-5 loss to Florida on July 19.
