Bay, Red Sox take on Royals in rubber game
Aug 6, 2008 - 10:16 AM Boston (65-49) at Kansas City (53-61), 8:10 pm EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Jason Bay has made quite a splash in his new uniform.
Bay is hitting .429 with one homer, six RBI and eight runs scored in five games in the American League since being traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates for Manny Ramirez in the blockbuster three-team deal on Thursday.
The British Columbia native had four hits and starter Josh Beckett threw an effective 6 2/3 innings to boost the Red Sox to an 8-2 win over the Royals on Tuesday in the middle match. The teams meet again on Wednesday.
Beckett snapped a personal three-game losing streak as the Red Sox remained three games back of the Tampa Bay Rays (67-45) in the American League East. The Rays defeated the Cleveland Indians, 8-4.
The Royals had won seven of eight before Tuesday, and continue to show a potent offense.
Tim Wakefield (6-8, 3.77 ERA) takes the mound for Boston with hopes of taming the Royals' hot bats.
The 42-year-old knuckleballer is coming off one of his most effective outings, tossing 6 1/3 scoreless frames against the Oakland Athletics on Friday. He didn't factor in the 2-1 triumph.
This will be the first time Wakefield faces the Royals this season. However, he is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three starts against them over the past three years.
Kansas City will counter with Luke Hochevar (6-9, 5.42), who has allowed 21 runs over his last five games. The top overall pick in the 2006 draft has one win since June 25 and was tagged for seven runs and five hits in six innings on May 19 against the Red Sox.
