Swisher, White Sox aim to hold onto AL Central lead

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Nick Swisher will attempt to build off his extra-innng heroics and help the Chicago White Sox keep the top spot in the American League Central when they host the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday.

Swisher hit a walk-off, three-run home run in the 14th inning to lift the White Sox to a 10-8 victory over the Tigers on Tuesday. The win, coupled with the Minnesota Twins' loss to the Seattle Mariners, lifted Chicago into sole possession of first place in the AL Central.

Paul Konerko, Carlos Quentin and Alexei Ramirez also homered for the White Sox, who overcame a five-run deficit before extra innings and handed the Tigers their fifth straight loss.

Placido Polanco delivered a go-ahead, two-run home run in the top of the decisive frame to give Detroit an 8-6 edge. It was the second blast of the contest for Polanco, who also opened the scoring with a two-run shot in the first.

Hoping to avoid their sixth consecutive defeat, the Tigers will turn to ace Justin Verlander (8-11, 4.49 ERA). The 25-year-old righthander is hoping to avoid his third loss in as many starts.

He will be opposed by lefthander John Danks (8-4, 3.31), who is looking to win his sixth straight decision. He has not lost since May 24.
