Rays look to surpass franchise's second-best win total
Aug 6, 2008 - 10:10 AM Cleveland (49-63) at Tampa Bay (67-45), 12:40 pm EDTST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- The surging Tampa Bay Rays can break the franchise's second-best win total for a season and pull within three games of setting a team record for victories as they take on the Cleveland Indians on Wednesday.
Tampa Bay finished with 67 wins in 2005 and had its best season in 2004 going 70-91. Now, it is looking to stay in the thick of the American League pennant race.
Scott Kazmir (8-5, 2.89 ERA) takes the mound for Tampa Bay with hopes of notching his second win in eight starts. The 24-year-old lefthander has allowed three or more runs in three of his last 10 starts.
Cleveland will counter with Jeremy Sowers (1-6, 5.82), who has allowed four or more runs in seven of his last 10 starts.
Sowers matched up with Kazmir last month, but didn't factor in the decision after giving up two runs and seven walks in four innings of a 5-2 defeat on July 13. The lefthander is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in two career starts against the Rays.
Tampa Bay is expected again to be without left fielder Carl Crawford, who missed his second straight game on Tuesday with a sore left hamstring.
Indians shortstop Jhonny Peralta has 26 RBI in his last 25 games and is hitting .435 with three home runs and nine RBIs against the Rays.
