Athletics visit Tigers hoping to end 10-game slide
Aug 8, 2008 - 10:08 AM Oakland (53-61) at Detroit (56-58) 7:05 p.m. EDTDETROIT (Ticker) -- Nothing has gone right for the Oakland Athletics since returning from the All-Star break and things don't appear to be getting any better.
The Athletics try to end their longest single-season losing streak in 14 years when they open a series against the Detroit Tigers on Friday.
Oakland endured its 10th consecutive loss on Thursday, as the Toronto Blue Jays successfully completed a four-game sweep with a 6-4 victory. The setback capped the Athletics' seventh straight series loss as they fell to 2-17 since the "Midsummer Classic" - the worst record in the majors over that span.
Oakland's current slide is its longest since dropping 12 straight in 1994. The Athletics also endured a 12-game losing from the end of the 1995 season into the start of the 1996 season.
A new series won't necessarily bring an end to the woes as Oakland has had hardly any success against Tigers starter Kenny Rogers (8-8, 4.98 ERA).
Rogers, 43, is 7-0 in his last nine starts against the Athletics, with his last loss against them coming on September 16, 2004. The veteran lefthander is 21-7 with a 4.28 ERA in 60 games - 36 starts - lifetime against Oakland.
Dallas Braden (2-2, 5.10) tries to avoid his third loss in as many starts when he counters for the Athletics. Braden surrendered four runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings on Sunday, suffering a 5-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
