Red-hot Ibanez, Mariners host Rays
Aug 8, 2008 - 8:02 AM Tampa Bay (68-46) at Seattle (45-70) 10:10 p.m. EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- Raul Ibanez has given the Seattle Mariners a sudden jolt.
Ibanez looks to continue his recent tear and lead the Mariners to their fifth win in six games on Friday when they duel the Tampa Bay Rays.
The 36-year-old left fielder, Ibanez has been red hot, posting a .480 average (12-for-25) with 16 RBI - 11 coming in a span of two games - and three home runs in his last six contests.
Ibanez launched his 18th home run - a solo shot - in the ninth inning on Thursday to lift the Mariners past the Rays, 2-1, in the series opener. The blast was the fourth walk-off homer of his career.
The veteran may struggle to keep his offensive explosion going against Rays starter James Shields (9-7, 3.63 ERA), who has yet to yield a hit to Ibanez in eight career at-bats.
Despite pitching well in his last two outings, Shields only has a loss and a no-decision. He has allowed five runs and 14 hits in 13 2/3 innings, but Tampa Bay scored two runs in the games.
Carlos Silva (4-12, 5.92) tries to earn his first win since June 28 for the Mariners.
