Lee, Indians aim to sweep Blue Jays
Aug 10, 2008 - 7:11 AM Cleveland (51-64) at Toronto (59-58) 1:07 p.m. EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- It has been a Cy Young caliber season for Cliff Lee, but he will look to do something for the first time when the Cleveland Indians take the field on Sunday: beat the Toronto Blue Jays.
Toronto is the only team in the American League that Lee (15-2, 2.58) has not beaten in his seven-year career. He is 0-3 lifetime in six starts, posting a 5.01 ERA.
However, in his one start this year against the Blue Jays, Lee did just about everything he could to earn his first career win against them. The 29-year-old pitched nine shutout innings, allowing seven hits and two walks, striking out five, but Shaun Marcum and two relievers went Lee one better with 10 shutout innings.. Toronto went on to score three runs in the 10th inning off Rafael Betancourt en route to a 3-0 win.
Lee's 15 wins have him tied for the lead in the American League and one behind Brandon Webb for the most wins in baseball.
Scott Richmond (0-1, 4.91) will make his third career start for Toronto, still in search of his first win. The righthander has pitched into the sixth inning of his first two starts, surrendering seven hits and three runs in each outing.
With a loss, the Blue Jays would suffer their first home sweep since they dropped three games to the Oakland Athletics on April 8-10.
After scoring 21 runs in a four-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics, Toronto's offense has sputtered, scoring two runs in each of the first two games of the series.
