Athletics eye series win over Tigers in rubber match

Aug 10, 2008 - 7:34 AM Oakland (54-62) at Detroit (57-59), 1:05 pm EDT

DETROIT (Ticker) -- As dismal as the Oakland Athletics have been after the All-Star break, they still have a lot at stake against the reeling Detroit Tigers.

The Athletics look to win a series and consecutive games for the first time in the second half as they square off against the Tigers on Sunday.

The last time Oakland won a series was on July 9, when it finished with two wins in a three-game set against the Seattle Mariners. It last notched back-to-back victories on July 10-11.

In the first 82 games, the Athletics recorded 45 wins, but just nine in the last 33 - a span in which the offense saw its run-scoring average fall from 4.4 to 3.2.

Greg Smith (5-10, 3.99) will take the mound for Oakland, which has dropped 11 of 12, with hopes of winning for the first time since June 30. The 24-year-old lefthander has allowed four or more runs in half of his past 10 outings and has surrendered five home runs in four starts.

Similarly, Nate Robertson (6-8, 6.11) has struggled and will be looking to notch his first victory since June 21. The lefthander has coughed up three or more runs in seven of his previous 10 outings and has pitched into the seventh inning just three times in that span.

Miguel Cabrera belted two home runs as the Tigers rolled to a 10-2 triumph on Saturday for their second win in nine contests.

Cabrera is hitting .348 in the 22 games since the All-Star break with seven home runs and 32 RBIs. He has posted 23 homers, 89 RBI - which ranks third in the American League - and is hitting .298 in 114 contests this season.

Frank Thomas blasted his eighth home run and 521st of his career, which tied him for 17th with Willie McCovey and Ted Williams on the all-time list.

On Friday, Oakland ended its 10-game losing skid thanks to Dallas Braden's strong outing in a 4-2 bout.
