Rays eye team-record win total
Aug 10, 2008 - 9:00 AM Tampa Bay (70-46) at Seattle (45-72) 4:10 pm EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Rays are one victory away from franchise history. If the Seattle Mariners continue on the pace they are on, they may set a dubious team record of their own.
The Rays attempt to set a team mark for wins in a single season on Sunday when they meet the Mariners in the final game of a four-game set.
Long synonymous with losing, Tampa Bay had eclipsed the 69-win mark only once in its 10 seasons of existence, when the 2004 team won a team-record 70.
The Rays (70-46) appear poised to not only reach their 71st win, but also end the losing ways that gave the team a miserable 645-972 mark as a franchise entering this season.
On the other hand, Seattle - with its .385 winning percentage this season - is headed towards its worst record since 1983 when it went 60-102 (.370).
In an attempt to set team history, Tampa Bay will turn to one of its hottest pitcher, Edwin Jackson (8-7, 4.22 ERA) , who has won his last three starts. In Tuesday's 8-4 win over Cleveland, the righthander allowed three runs and seven hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Seattle will counter with R.A. Dickey (3-6, 4.36), who will look to pick up his second straight win. The knuckleballer took a no-decision in his last turn, though, after permitting three runs and eight hits in seven innings of an 8-7 win over Minnesota on Tuesday.
