Astros target fifth straight triumph
Aug 11, 2008 - 1:47 PM San Francisco (50-66) at Houston (58-59) 8:05 pm EDTHOUSTON (Ticker) -- Not even the loss of the National League's RBI leader can halt the streaking Houston Astros.
The Astros eye their fifth straight victory on Monday and second since losing slugger Carlos Lee when they host the first of three games against the San Francisco Giants.
Lee, who leads the team with 28 homers and 100 RBI, was lost for up to eight weeks with a broken left pinkie finger on Saturday during the third game of Houston's four-game sweep of Cincinnati.
On Sunday, it was light-hitting Michael Bourn's time to pick up the slack, as he homered and added a career-high four RBI in the Astros' fourth straight triumph.
The Astros, who have won 12 of 16, may be encouraged by a visit from the Giants, a team who they defeated three times during a four-game set from May 12-15. To extend their winning streak, they will need to extend the struggles of the one San Francisco starter pitcher they did not face during that series, Jonathan Sanchez (8-8, 4.64 ERA).
The lefthander, who was 8-4 with a 3.79 ERA at the end of June, dropped his fourth straight decision in Tuesday's 11-4 loss to Atlanta after permitting three runs and seven hits over five innings.
Houston will answer with Brandon Backe (6-11, 5.35), who hasn't been much better than his counterpart lately. The righthander lost his second straight decision after surrendering a career-high 11 runs and nine hits with six walks over just 3 1/3 innings in Wednesday's 11-4 setback against the Chicago Cubs.
