Twins hope to maintain success at home
Aug 11, 2008 - 1:48 PM New York (63-55) at Minnesota (65-52) 8:10 pm EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Caught up in a tight, two-team race in the American League Central, the Minnesota Twins would like nothing more than to extend their dominance at the Metrodome by ending their misery against the New York Yankees.
The Twins seek just their third win in eight tries against the Yankees on Monday when the teams begin a three-game set.
Minnesota, which has won eight straight home series and is 39-21 at the Metrodome, missed on an opportunity to complete a four-game road sweep on Sunday, falling 5-4 in 12 innings at Kansas City.
The setback stripped the Twins of first place in the AL Central from the White Sox (65-51) one day after taking over the division lead for the second time in a week. The team also lost a half-game lead on August 3, less than 24 hours after overtaking Chicago for the first time since mid-May.
In an attempt to regain the division lead, Minnesota will turn to Glen Perkins (8-3, 4.38), who will try to reverse his fortunes against the Yankees after going 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA in two career starts against them.
The lefthander did not figure into the decision in Monday's 11-6 loss to Seattle despite surrendering five runs and 12 hits over 6 1/3 innings.
He'll be opposed by former Twin Sidney Ponson (7-2, 4.23 ERA), who made seven starts with Minnesota last season. The righthander improved to 3-1 with a 4.73 ERA since joining the Yankees' rotation in June after allowing three runs and six hits over 6 1/3 innings in Wednesday's 6-3 victory over Texas.
