Brewers look to continue strong run
Aug 12, 2008 - 2:05 PM Milwaukee (68-51) at San Diego (46-72) 10:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The Milwaukee Brewers eye their seventh consecutive victory on Tuesday when they begin a three-game set against the San Diego Padres.
Since coming up short in the first of three games at NL Central-worst Cincinnati (52-67) to drop its wild-card lead to a half-game, Milwaukee took the final two games of that series before completing a four-game sweep against the major's worst team in the Washington Nationals (44-75) in Monday's 7-1 win.
The Brewers' winning streak has them three games ahead of St. Louis (66-55) in the wild-card race. The Brewers appear to have a good chance of increasing that lead against the Padres, who reside in the NL West basement and are just 4-16 at home since June 20.
Milwaukee will hand the ball to Jeff Suppan (7-7, 4.70 ERA) in hopes that he can win his third consecutive start. The righthander allowed three runs and seven hits over seven innings in Wednesday's 6-3 victory over the Reds.
His opponent will be Cha Seung Baek (4-5, 4.90), who is still seeking his first win in Petco Park despite having joined San Diego's rotation in a trade with Seattle in late May.
The righthander, 0-5 with a 6.96 ERA in seven appearances at Petco Park, collected a win in his last time out, yielding two runs and eight hits over 6 1/3 innings in Wednesday's 4-2 triumph over the New York Mets.
