Maholm, Pirates set to face Reds
Aug 13, 2008 - 10:12 AM Cincinnati (53-67) at Pittsburgh (54-65) 7:05 p.m. EDTPITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- Paul Maholm will try to keep the Pittsburgh Pirates from falling closer to last place when they host the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday.
The Reds, who currently reside in the basement of the National League Central, gained a game on the Pirates Tuesday with a 5-1 triumph and sit 1 1/2 games out of fifth place. Edinson Volquez pitched 6 2/3 strong innings and Brandon Phillips homered in the win.
The Pirates have lost three of four and have managed six runs in their setbacks.
Maholm (7-7, 3.76 ERA) will try to buck the losing trend. The lefthander has been Pittsburgh's most consistent starter with an ERA nearly 1 1/2 runs better than his nearest qualifying teammate.
Maholm has allowed three earned runs or less in eight of his last 10 starts and is coming off an outing at Philadelphia on Friday in which he went seven scoreless frames.
The Reds will counter with struggling Josh Fogg (2-4, 7.98). The veteran righthander is 0-2 with an 11.08 ERA over his last three starts, allowing 22 hits in 13 innings.
