Red Sox, Rangers to put offense on display

Aug 13, 2008 - 10:10 AM Texas (61-59) at Boston (69-51) 7:05 p.m. EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) -- The top offenses in the American League will square off again Wednesday when the Boston Red Sox host the Texas Rangers.

The clubs did not disappoint on Tuesday, matching an American League record with 36 combined runs as the Red Sox came from behind to claim a 19-17 victory after blowing a pair of 10-run leads.

Boston, which ranks second to the Rangers in the AL in runs scored, piled on 10 runs in the opening frame, thanks in part to a pair of three-run homers by David Ortiz. The Red Sox went on to grab a 12-2 advantage before Texas came storming back, making it 12-10 on a three-run blast by Ian Kinsler.

A five-run sixth inning gave Texas the lead, and Boston needed a three-run homer from Kevin Youkilis in the eighth to grab the lead for good.

Jon Lester (10-4, 3.23 ERA) will try to tame the Rangers' offense and get back to his winning ways. The 24-year-old lefthander suffered a loss Friday for the first time since May 25 when he allowed four runs in seven innings against the Chicago White Sox.

Lester has lasted at least seven innings in each of his last six starts and will need to reach the late innings again after the Red Sox burned through five relievers in the slugfest.

Texas will counter with righthander Luis Mendoza (3-5, 7.50). The 24-year-old has bounced between the bullpen, rotation and minor leagues, and lasted three innings in his last outing, allowing six runs while taking a loss at Baltimore on Friday.
