Yankees wrap up dismal road trip vs. Twins
Aug 13, 2008 - 10:07 AM NY Yankees (64-56) at Minnesota (66-53) 1:10 pm. EDTMINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees were able to overcome a rare blown save by Mariano Rivera and will look to close out a disappointing road trip on a high note against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday.
Rivera had converted a career-best 28 straight saves before allowing a game-tying, three-run homer to Delmon Young in the eighth inning on Tuesday.
"I made a mistake, the ball caught too much of the plate," Rivera said. "I was thinking, hopefully it goes foul. It didn't go foul. So we have to battle and preserve the tie game."
The future Hall of Famer was bailed out when Alex Rodriguez and Xavier Nady homered in a three-run 12th to lead the Yankees to a 9-6 win. New York, which snapped a four-game skid, is 2-7 on its current 10-game road trip.
The Yankees hope to end the journey by beating up on Kevin Slowey (8-8, 4.07 ERA), again. New York has rocked the righthander for nine runs and 13 hits in nine innings. However, Slowey is coming off a solid outing in which he allowed one run and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings of a 4-1 victory over Kansas City on Friday.
New York counters with Darrell Rasner (5-8, 5.28), who is back in the rotation after a stint in the bullpen. Rasner allowed three runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings of relief in a loss to Anaheim on Friday. He is 1-4 with a 6.82 ERA in his last six starts.
