Brewers, Sheets look to complete sweep of Padres
Aug 14, 2008 - 10:06 AM Milwaukee (70-51) at San Diego (46-74) 3:35 p.m. EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- After emerging from behind CC Sabathia's enormous shadow, Ben Sheets looks to provide the Milwaukee Brewers with another stellar performance.
Sheets goes for his second win in as many starts on Thursday when the Brewers try to complete a sweep of the San Diego Padres.
Sheets (11-5, 2.95 ERA) struggled to find a victory after Milwaukee acquired the reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Sabathia from the Cleveland Indians on July 7, posting an 0-3 record in five starts following the trade.
However, the 30-year-old righthander returned to his dominating form on Saturday, registering his second shutout. Sheets surrendered five hits and struck out six without issuing a walk, leading the Brewers to a 6-0 victory over the Washington Nationals.
Milwaukee needs Sheets to be at his best as it will be facing 2007 National League Cy Young winner Jake Peavy (8-8, 2.68).
Peavy's .500 record is a poor indication of how well he has pitched lately. The 27-year-old righthander is 1-3 in his last five starts put has surrendered four runs once during that span while going at least six innings in each outing.
However, Peavy struggled with his control during his last start, yielding three runs and five hits while walking five in six innings, suffering his second loss in as many starts as the Padres dropped a 6-3 decision to the Colorado Rockies on Friday.
