White Sox go for sweep of lowly Royals
Aug 14, 2008 - 10:04 AM Kansas City (54-66) at Chi White Sox (67-52) 2:05 p.m. EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago White Sox will continue their fight for American League Central supremacy when they host the Kansas City Royals on Thursday.
The White Sox maintained their one-half game advantage over the Minnesota Twins (67-53) with a 4-0 win over the Royals on Wednesday. With the Twins idle on Thursday, Chicago has a chance to push the advantage to a full game by completing a sweep of Kansas City.
The White Sox have dominated the first two games of the series with pitching, shutting out the Royals in the first two games by a combined 13-0. Javier Vazquez turned in eight strong innings on Tuesday and Mark Buehrle followed it up with seven solid frames on Wednesday.
With Jose Contreras out for the season after rupturing his left Achilles tendon on Saturday, rookie Lance Broadway (0-0, 0.00) will get a chance to start for the White Sox. The righthander, who turns 25 next week, has made one appearance out of the bullpen for Chicago, tossing one-third of an inning.
Broadway, who made four appearances - one start - in the majors last season, went 10-7 with a 4.68 ERA in 23 games - 22 starts at Class AAA Charlotte.
Kansas City will counter with righthander Kyle Davies (5-3, 4.66). The 24-year-old is coming off a terrible outing against Minnesota last Friday in which he allowed three runs and walked five batters in 2 1/3 innings to suffer a loss.
Davies has started against Chicago twice this season, going 1-0 while allowing six runs in 11 combined frames.
