Wellemeyer making most of starting opportunity
Aug 14, 2008 - 10:14 AM St. Louis (67-56) at Florida (63-58) 7:10 p.m. EDTMIAMI (Ticker) -- Injuries forced Todd Wellemeyer into the St. Louis Cardinals' rotation and the righthander has helped heal their ailments.
Wellemeyer goes for his third straight victory on Thursday when the Cardinals wrap up their four-game series against the Florida Marlins.
The 29-year-old veteran Wellemeyer (9-4, 4.01 ERA) had nine wins in his first five years in the majors, spending time with the Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals and Marlins before landing with the Cardinals last season.
After staff ace Chris Carpenter, Mark Mulder and Joel Pineiro all suffered injuries early in 2008, Wellemeyer was inserted as a starter and did not disappoint, equaling his career total in wins while helping St. Louis stay in the thick of the playoff race.
Wellemeyer came up huge in his last start, allowing three runs and six hits in 6 2/3 innings, walking one while striking out five during Saturday's 12-3 victory over the Cubs, who sit 7 1/2 games in front of third-place St. Louis in the National League Central.
Scott Olsen (6-7, 4.04), who is 1-3 with a 5.20 ERA in his last five starts, tries to get back on track when he takes the mound for the Marlins.
