Liriano takes the mound for Twins in opener

Aug 15, 2008 - 10:28 AM Seattle (46-74) at Minnesota (67-53), 8:10 pm EDT

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- A quartet of young starters has surprisingly kept the Minnesota Twins in the thick of the American League playoff chase. The return of the fifth member of their rotation might be the one to put them over the top.

Francisco Liriano makes his third start since coming off the disabled list as the Twins host the Seattle Mariners on Friday.

The Twins trail the Chicago White Sox (68-52) by one game in the AL Central Division, and will ride the arms of five hurlers under the age of 27 as they bid to punch their tickets into the playoffs.

Kevin Slowey, Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn and Glen Perkins have combined to go 34-20 with a 3.87 ERA.

The 24-year-old Liriano (2-3, 6.55 ERA) was 12-3 with a 2.16 ERA in 2006, but missed last season after undergoing elbow ligament replacement surgery. He returned in April, but reinjured himself after posting a dismal 11.32 ERA in three starts.

In his first outing back on August 3, he tossed six scoreless frames against the Cleveland Indians, surrendering three hits in the 6-2 triumph. Then on Saturday, Liriano notched another win over the Kansas City Royals after allowing three runs in 5 2/3 stellar innings.

Seattle will counter with Carlos Silva (4-13, 5.93), who is 1-13 since starting the season undefeated in his first three decisions. The 29-year-old has a 5.68 ERA this month and is making his first start this season against his former team.

Silva spent four years with the Twins and was 13-14 with a 4.19 ERA in 33 starts with them last season.
