Hernandez attempts to halt powerful bats of White Sox

Aug 19, 2008 - 12:39 PM Seattle (46-78) at Chi White Sox (71-53) 8:11 pm EDT

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago White Sox have been hitting home runs at an alarming rate the last couple days. Now they'll try to continue their torrid power-hitting pace against one of stingiest pitchers in the American League.

The White Sox hope to continue their recent offensive surge when they continue their three-game set against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday.

Carlos Quentin, who hit his league-leading 35th homer in Monday's 13-5 series-opening win over Seattle, was one of four players to homer in the rout.

The game marked the team's second straight contest in which it scored 13 runs and hit four home runs, marking the eighth time this season the majors' most proficient home run-hitting team hit four in a single game and the 14th time it has scored at least 10 runs.

If the White Sox have designs of continuing their home run-hitting prowess, they will have to do so against Felix Hernandez (7-7, 3.04 ERA), who has surrendered just 10 homers this year.

Hernandez's ability to keep the ball in play is the second-lowest mark among AL starters who have pitched more than 125 innings, trailing only Cleveland's Cliff Lee - a leading candidate for the Cy Young Award.

The White Sox will counter with Clayton Richard (0-2, 9.64), who will be making his first start in place of the injured Jose Contreras since being recalled by the team on Friday. The lefthander made a relief appearance on Sunday against Oakland, striking out two over a scoreless frame in Sunday's 13-1 romp of the Athletics.
