Webb seeks career-best 19th win vs. Padres
Aug 21, 2008 - 10:21 AM San Diego (48-78) at Arizona (66-60) 9:40 pm. EDTPHOENIX (Ticker) -- Brandon Webb has his eyes set on his second Cy Young Award in three years. He will try to record a career-best and major league-leading 19th win Thursday when the Arizona Diamondback aim for a sweep of the San Diego Padres.
Webb (18-4, 2.85 ERA) is seeking a sixth straight victory after yielding two runs and four hits in eight innings of a 12-2 win over Houston on Friday.
Webb, who finished third in the Cy Young voting last season, has been dominating the National League for the past three years with two pitches - a sinker and a changeup. After facing Webb, Houston slugger Lance Berkman was dumbfounded.
"His ball moves about two feet," Berkman said. "He must be the only starter in the game who literally can throw two pitches and win 20 games every year."
Berkman isn't the only one confused by Webb, who is 7-0 with a 2.28 ERA in his last 10 starts.
He will try and help protect Arizona's two-game lead over Los Angeles (64-62) in the NL West. Adam Dunn homered for the second straight game in Wednesday's 8-6 victory. Dunn is hitting .308 (8-for-26) with two homers and eight RBI in eight games since being traded to Arizona from Cincinnati on August 11.
The lefthanded slugger will look for more success against rookie righthander Chad Reineke (1-0, 5.40), who won his major-league debut by holding the Philadelphia Phillies to three runs and five hits in five innings of a 8-3 win on Saturday.
