Twins, Angels meet in battle of playoff hopefuls

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are coasting into the postseason. The Minnesota Twins have their work cut out for them.

The Twins will look to move one step closer when they visit the Angels on Thursday.

Minnesota sits one game behind the Chicago White Sox (73-53) in the American League Central and one-half game behind the Boston Red Sox (73-54) in the wild-card race.

This marks the beginning of a 14-game road trip for the Twins, who are 26-31 away from the Metrodome. Minnesota will play 24 of its next 30 games on the road before ending the season on a six-game homestand.

The Angels avoided a sweep on Wednesday with a 5-4 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Twins will send righthander Scott Baker (7-3, 3.91 ERA) to the mound in the opener. Baker has struggled of late, posting a 6.08 ERA over his last four starts.

Anaheim has had no trouble solving Baker in five career starts, pounding the 26-year-old to an 0-4 record and a 7.36 ERA.

The Angels will counter with ace John Lackey (10-2, 3.22). The veteran righthander has not suffered a loss since July 5.
