Athletics desperate for second straight win
Aug 22, 2008 - 10:19 AM Oakland (58-69) at Seattle (46-81) 10:10 p.m. EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics have no solutions to their second-half woes.
The Athletics try to earn back-to-back victories for the first time since before the All-Star break on Friday when they face the Seattle Mariners.
Oakland entered the second half with a 51-44 record, battling for the top spot in the American League West and wild card. However, the Athletics have won seven of 32 games following the "Midsummer Classic" and haven't claimed consecutive victories since July 10-11.
Pitching has been Oakland's biggest problem. The Athletics are struggling to rebound following the trades of ace Rich Harden, Chad Gaudin and Joe Blanton. After leading the majors with a 3.39 ERA in the first half, the A's have posted a 5.08 mark.
During the series opener, three pitchers combined to blank the Mariners, 2-0. Rookie Gio Gonzalez (1-2, 7.53 ERA) tries to duplicate that feat.
Gonzalez was pounded for eight runs - seven earned - and six hits in 3 1/3 innings, enduring a 13-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday.
Ryan Feierabend (0-1, 18.00) counters for the Mariners, who have lost a season-high seven straight games for the third time.
