After 12-inning win, Twins continue 14-game road trip
Aug 22, 2008 - 10:19 AM Minnesota (73-54) at LA Angels (77-49) 10:05 p.m. EDTANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The Minnesota Twins haven't had much success on the road, but they started their longest trip of the season on a high note.
The Twins go for their fourth straight victory on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Minnesota, which is 27-31 away from home, opened its 14-game road swing due to the Republican National Convention with a 12-inning victory. Denard Span's RBI single on Thursday plated Nick Punto, who tripled to lead off the frame, and lifted the Twins to a 2-1 victory.
The win pushed Minnesota into a tie with the Boston Red Sox (73-54) for the American League wild card and moved it within one-half game of the Chicago White Sox (73-53) for first place in the AL Central.
Glen Perkins (10-3, 4.17 ERA) tries to move Minnesota atop the playoff race when he takes the mound. Perkins has won each of his last three decisions, but surrendered four runs and eight hits in six innings on Sunday. The 25-year-old lefthander still earned the win as the Twins claimed an 11-8 victory against the Seattle Mariners.
Joe Saunders (14-5, 3.14) tries to earn his first win after a trio of no-decisions for the Angels.
