Mariners look for another win vs. Athletics
Aug 23, 2008 - 10:21 AM Oakland (58-70) at Seattle (47-81) 10:10 p.m. EDTSEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle Mariners will try to win for the seventh time this month when they host the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.
Rookie Jeff Clement drove in three runs and Jose Lopez plated a pair in a 7-5 win on Friday that snapped a seven-game slide. The Mariners own the worst record in the American League.
If there is any team that Seattle has a chance against, it's the A's, who fell to a major league-worst 7-26 since the All-Star break with the setback.
The A's will send newly recalled lefthander Dana Eveland (7-8, 4.46) to the mound. The rookie was demoted after allowing nine runs in two innings in suffering a loss at Boston on August 2. He went 0-3 with a 10.59 ERA in his last four major league starts.
Eveland's last win came against the Mariners on July 7, when he allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Seattle will counter with veteran Jarrod Washburn (5-13, 4.95). The lefthander was coveted by several teams at the trade deadline and into the August waiver period, but reported demands by the Mariners that any team trading for Washburn not only take on his salary but surrender a top prospect prevented a deal.
Washburn has been terrible of late, going 0-4 with a 7.36 ERA in his last four outings.
