Lester, Red Sox try to gain ground in Toronto
Aug 23, 2008 - 10:20 AM Boston (74-54) at Toronto (66-62) 1:07 p.m. EDTTORONTO (Ticker) -- The Boston Red Sox can't seem to gain any ground on the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East, but they can wreck any playoff dreams the Toronto Blue Jays have.
The Blue Jays have made a quiet, if improbable, push into the wild-card picture with a hot August, but the Red Sox slowed down their momentum with an 8-4 victory on Friday.
Now, Jon Lester (12-4, 3.17 ERA) looks to make it two in a row. The Red Sox couldn't ask for better odds.
The third-year lefthander has been Boston's most reliable starter, winning nine of his last 10 decisions. Facing a Toronto club that is 6-3 against the defending champions, Lester has his work cut out for him.
However, he's had his way with this lineup before. In his one start against the Blue Jays this year, he held them to one hit over eight innings, striking out six and walking four, while taking a no-decision in a 1-0 Boston victory.
Last year, he tossed 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball against Toronto in another winning effort.
Countering for the Blue Jays is second-year righthander Jesse Litsch, who is coming off his best start. He tossed seven shutout innings, striking out three and giving up four hits in an August 14 meeting with the Detroit Tigers. He did not factor in the decision, as the Tigers scored five in the eighth off the Blue Jays' leaky bullpen to steal a victory.
