Myers, Phillies look to turn tables on Dodgers
Aug 25, 2008 - 1:08 PM Los Angeles (65-65) at Philadelphia (71-59) 7:05 pm. EDTPHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- A trip to the minors certainly did wonders for Brett Myers, who will try and help the Philadelphia Phillies complete a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.
Myers (6-10, 4.71 ERA) , who served as the team's closer last season, accepted a demotion to the minors in June and has come back a changed pitcher. The righthander is 3-1 with a 1.94 ERA in six starts since being recalled from Class AAA Lehigh Valley on July 23.
His lone loss in that span came to Los Angeles, which swept a four-game series from Philadelphia from August 11-14. Meyers, along with Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, would like pay the Dodgers back for the damaging sweep that helped knock them out of first place.
"I think we owe them one more, don't we?" Manuel said.
Myers also owes them one, and is coming off a dominating performance on Wednesday in which he scattered nine hits in a 9-0 victory over Washington for his first shutout of the season.
Los Angeles, which trails Arizona (68-62) by three games in the National League West, counters with Chad Billingsley (12-9, 3.10). The righthander is looking to win a fourth straight decision and set a new career high in wins.
He'll have to slow a red-hot Phillies team that has won six of seven to climb within one-half game of the New York Mets (72-59) for first place in the National League East. On Sunday, Pedro Feliz tied the game in the ninth with an RBI single and then belted a walk-off homer in the 11th inning of a 5-2 victory.
