Thome aims to tie Mantle vs. Orioles

BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Jim Thome looks to join another legend in the history books on Tuesday when the Chicago White Sox continue a four-game series with the Baltimore Orioles.

The Orioles won the completion of a suspended game, 4-3, on Monday as Lou Montanez singled home the go-ahead run in the 14th inning. The game was suspended on April 28 due to rain.

In the nightcap, Thome belted a go-ahead home run - his 535th - in the sixth inning to help the White Sox to a 4-3 win. The slugger moved into sole possession of 15th place on the all-time home run, ahead of Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx.

Now, he has his eyes set on another Hall of Famer - Mickey Mantle. Thome needs one homer to tie Mantle, and lefthander Brian Burres is the the man with the unenviable task of slowing him.

Burres (7-7, 5.64 ERA) is expected to be recalled from Class AAA Norfolk in time to make his first start in nearly two months. The 27-year-old allowed four runs and four hits in 1 1/3 innings of a 13-3 loss to the New York Yankees on June 30.

Chicago, which leads Minnesota (74-57) by one game in the American League Central, counters with Gavin Floyd (13-6, 3.78). Floyd is 3-0 with a 4.67 ERA in his last six starts.
