Banged-up Angels aim for elusive series win vs. Rangers
Aug 29, 2008 - 10:39 AM Texas (66-69) at La Angels (81-52) 10:05 pm. EDTANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- If the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have a concern heading down the stretch, it's their health. Anaheim has built a huge lead in the American League West, but injuries are threatening to ruin its run at home-field advantage.
The shorthanded Angels duel the Texas Rangers on Friday.
Anaheim, which trails Tampa Bay (81-51) by one-half game for the best record in the AL, lost both second baseman Howie Kendrick and shortstop Erick Aybar to hamstring injuries on Wednesday. Kendrick was placed on the disabled list prior to Thursday's 7-5 win and Aybar is day-to-day.
In addition to those injuries, third baseman Chone Figgins has been bothered by an irritated toe and designated hitter Garret Anderson is dealing with tendinitis in his left knee. Both have been playing through the pain.
The Angels need a strong start from Ervin Santana (13-5, 3.41 ERA). The righthander has not received a decision in his last three starts despite a 3.09 ERA.
Anaheim, which has lost seven of 12, is looking for its first series win since sweeping the New York Yankees from August 8-10. It will look to rough up Dustin Nippert (1-3, 7.83), who will be making his second start of the season. The righthander is once again filling in for Vicente Padilla, who has been bothered by a neck injury.
