Phillies look for split vs. Cubs, try to keep pressure on in NL East
Aug 31, 2008 - 8:06 AM Philadelphia (74-62) at Chi Cubs (85-51) 2:20 pm EDTCHICAGO (Ticker) -- Jayson Werth had a hand in scoring four of his team's five runs on Saturday. One day later, he hopes to do it again to keep the Philadelphia Phillies near the top of the National League East.
Werth and the Phillies attempt to salvage a four-game split on Sunday when they conclude their series with the Chicago Cubs.
After going 4-for-5 with two homers and four RBI in Saturday's 5-2 victory over Chicago, Werth helped Philadelphia moved one game behind the Mets (75-61) in the division after their loss to the Marlins.
In addition to carrying the Phillies' offense on Saturday, Werth is batting .522 (12-for-23) with three homers and 11 RBI over his last six contests against the Cubs.
In the finale, Philadelphia will turn to Jamie Moyer (11-7, 3.81 ERA), who will be attempting to rebound from his worst start of the season. The lefthander went a season-low three innings, but did not factor into the decision after surrendering six runs and nine hits in an 8-7, 13-inning win over the Mets on Tuesday.
The Cubs, who have not dropped consecutive games since July 25-26, will turn to ace Carlos Zambrano (13-5, 3.53).
The righthander is coming off a rough start of his own in a 14-9 win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday after permitting six runs and eight hits with four walks, failing to make it out of the fifth inning for the second time in four starts.
