Rockies hope to remain in NL West race with series win vs. Padres
Aug 31, 2008 - 8:34 AM Colorado (64-73) at San Diego (52-83) 4:05 pm EDTSAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- The Colorado Rockies wasted a golden opportunity to make up ground in the National League West on Saturday. One day later, they hope another shot against one of baseball's worst teams will keep them comfortably in the race for another miraculous late-season run.
The Rockies eye a series win on Sunday when they close out their set against the San Diego Padres.
Colorado lost for only the fourth time in 14 games on Saturday, 9-4, to San Diego. As a result, it missed an opportunity to take advantage of a loss by Arizona (69-66) to the Los Angeles Dodgers (66-70), the teams it trails by six and 3 1/2 games, respectively, in the division.
The Rockies made the postseason with a brilliant run in which they won 14 of their final 15 games last season to make the playoffs before sweeping the Chicago Cubs and Arizona in succession to make their first World Series.
They figure to have their hands full against Jake Peavy (9-9, 2.84 ERA), who will pitching with an extra day of rest after San Diego elected to give him some more time to recover after a 121-pitch outing in Monday's 4-2 win over Arizona.
In that game, the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner allowed two runs and four hits over seven frames, striking out seven in a no-decision. Making life tougher on the Rockies is that the righthander sports a major league-best 1.54 ERA in 12 home starts.
Colorado will respond with Jeff Francis (4-8, 5.36), who is 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in his last three starts after a dismal 3-8 beginning to the season in which he had an ERA that reached 5.81 after his last loss on August 7.
The lefthander ended a five-game winless streak in Monday's 4-2 victory over the Giants, yielding two runs and seven hits over seven innings.
