Halladay duels Pettitte as Jays face Yankees
Aug 31, 2008 - 9:28 AM Toronto (69-66) at NY Yankees (72-63) 1:05 pm EDTBRONX, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees have had their share of headaches this season. Their migraine known as Roy Halladay awaits them on Sunday when they face the Toronto Blue Jays in the last game of a three-game set.
The Blue Jays' righthander has won three straight starts against the Yankees after losing to them on Opening Day. He was masterful against the Yankees on July 11, throwing a two-hit shutout.
Overall, Halladay (16-9, 2.69 ERA) is 13-5 with a 2.88 ERA against the Yankees.
The Yankees counter with Andy Pettitte (13-10, 4.37), who is usually rock-solid in the second half but has mirrored his team's struggles, going 1-3 in his last six starts with a 6.75 ERA. Called upon to stop the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, he failed, allowing six runs and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings of a 7-3 loss.
On Saturday, the Yankees blew a four-run lead, falling 7-6. The defeat was made even more bitter when they failed to plate the tying run in the ninth inning despite having runners on first and second with no outs.
Alex Rodriguez scalded a ball to third baseman Jose Bautista, who turned it into a 5-3 double play. Cody Ransom then flew out to end the game.
The game marks Toronto's final appearance at Yankee Stadium.
