Santana looks to continue strong stretch vs. Brewers
Sep 1, 2008 - 1:50 PM Ny Mets (76-61) at Milwaukee (80-56) 2:05 pm. EDTMILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Johan Santana has not lost in over two months. The New York Mets hope that doesn't change on Monday when they begin a tough series against Ben Sheets and the wild-card leading Milwaukee Brewers.
The Mets, who let a seven-game lead slip away with 17 to play last September, hold a tenuous one-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies (75-62) in the National League East.
New York acquired Santana (12-7, 2.70 ERA) in the offseason to help get past that collapse and lead them back to the postseason. He is certainly doing all he can. A two-time Cy Young Award winner, Santana is 4-0 with a 1.75 ERA with two complete games in his last seven starts and has not lost since June 28.
The Brewers, who are seeking their ninth win in 10 games, counter with Sheets (12-7, 3.05). Sheets has taken a back seat to CC Sabathia over the last month. Sabathia tossed a controversial one-hitter in a 7-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Sunday to improve to 9-0 since being acquired from Cleveland.
Meanwhile, Milwaukee's former ace is just 2-5 with a 3.63 ERA in nine starts since Sabathia joined the team. The righthander allowed five hits in six innings of a 12-0 victory over St. Louis on Tuesday.
The Brewers, who have not reached the postseason since 1982, hold a 5 1/2 game lead over Philadelphia and a 6 1/2 game lead over the Cardinals (74-63) in the wild card race.
